Blind faith nr walker6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Will is more than a friend to him, but Mark doesn't recognize the feelings as love. ![]() Under all the bluster, Mark has a heart of gold. Mark is definitely a character he's outrageous, easy, forward, and hilarious. Unless he figures it out soon, he will lose Will forever. Mark has never had any use for love or commitment, so when his best friend, Will Parkinson, falls in love with him, Mark simply can't imagine himself being in love, so he doesn't see it. He is also kind and nurturing and the best friend you could have but when it comes to love, he's dumb as a rock. Mark is intelligent, witty, sarcastic, charming. Walker which focuses on Mark Gattison, who has become my favorite character in the series. 'Blindside' is the third book in the Blind Faith series by N.R. Heat book bill buford6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() You certainly don't get that same sense of desperation from Buford-the fiction editor at The New Yorker for eight years until he left in 2002 to begin researching his book-who treats his detour from the editorial desk as an earnest quest for another skill set. Orwell was literally starving when he accepted the most menial job in the grand hotel's sub-basement. Ever since Down and Out in Paris and London-Orwell's gritty account of, in part, life as a lowly plongeur (dishwasher) at "Hotel X" in Paris in the 1920s-the gastronomic milieu has been represented in literature as a manifestation of purgatory on earth, populated by misfits and renegades unable to secure conventional employment elsewhere. ![]()

Still by Ann Mayburn6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Nausea filled my mouth with spit as I examined the jagged cut running from my temple into my shaved hairline, the tiny black stitches making my skin crawl. The place reeked of wealth and elegance, a lovely space that I would normally have admired, but right now I was just trying to keep myself from freaking the hell out.Īfter I lifted the edge of the bandage covering the wound on my head with a wince, I gasped when I saw the damage. Slate tiles adorned the floor, bordered by a complex mosaic of brass, coral, and turquoise glass tiles. ![]() I stared at myself in the massive mirror that stood over two black marble sinks before looking away and trying to distract myself from my battered state by examining the bathroom. My dry mouth tasted like it had been coated with the contents of an ashtray. Justice had to be served, and I was just the man to do it. With the utmost care, I ghosted a kiss over Joy’s round cheek right over her dimple, then forced myself to leave her. Kayla, their third roommate, was still high out of her fucking mind on heroine and being dealt with by Leo’s men. It was time to deal with the motherfuckers that did this to Hannah and Joy. My phone buzzed, and I reluctantly let go of Joy’s hand, darkness filling me at the words on the screen. ![]()

![]() ![]() Could the writer not be bothered to come up with an actual name for his character? And then there is Mainly Murder (1937) by William Roughead. Harvey’s The Mysterious Mr Badman (1934). Naomi novik spinning silver6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Spinning Silver is a true page-turner! It was highly recommended by my writing group, and admittedly, it made me eager to get my hands on it. Miryem’s quest takes her, and her two allies, into fatal choices and to their own limits of power. Only, the Tsar Mirnatius hides a terrible secret that looms over the two kingdoms like a black cloud, threatening to swallow them whole. He gives her an outrageous challenge, and Miryem unintentionally brings two young women into her nightmare: a poor girl, Wanda, and an unlucky daughter of a scheming lord, who secretly plans for her to marry a handsome young tsar. The king of the Staryk, creatures who live in a world of ice and snow, overhears a boast by Miryem, and her fate, along with two kingdoms is cast. It isn’t long before she gains a reputation for not backing down, but also for turning silver into gold. The protagonist, Miryem decides to take over the family business of moneylending since her father is unable to collect the debts owed, which caused her family to be one step away from poverty. In Naomi Novik’s brilliant fantasy, three unlikely women are drawn together in a quest to stop a terror-of ice and fire-that threatens them all. ![]() |
