![]() ![]() Stanley has published six “Creature Features Movie Guide” compilations, the last in 1990. “What amazed me about all of this is ‘Creature Features’ left the air 24 years ago this past August, and now there’s a documentary that runs 75 minutes about the local television show.” “It’s like a resurrected corpse,” says Stanley, a longtime resident of Pacifica. Stanley will sign books and DVDs in the lobby and appear onstage with “Watch Horror Films” producer Tom Wyrsch and contemporary horror host Mr. Wednesday at the Balboa, 3630 Balboa St., San Francisco. Two decades later the program is still remembered fondly, via homages such as the double bill of “Watch Horror Films - Keep America Strong,” a new documentary about the show, and “Nightmare in Blood,” a 1978 horror feature by Stanley. ![]() Host Bob Wilkins provided the humor and insights from 1971 to 1978, John Stanley from 1979 to 1984. Saturday nights in the late 1970s and early ’80s, KTVU’s “Creature Features” brightened Bay Area living rooms littered with teens, 20-somethings and families who liked sci-fi and horror, often shlocky, and introduced with wit and personality. Those were the Dark Ages (to people born since), but the occasional ray of light shined through. Once upon a time, there were no DVD or VHS players, no cable, and TV consisted of three networks and a handful of independents. ![]()
